MommyBuzz, which launched last week, is a new social network for moms. Users can create profiles, post photos, join clubs, write blog entries and create classified ads. There's also a tiered friends system: users add their immediate friends, then use the system to find friends of friends - all the way down to the "fourth level". Profiles can be made public or private, and public profiles show up in search results. Additionally, there's an on-site instant messenger - you can see the online/offline status of other members and send them an IM.

This is an interesting market. Moms network extensively in real life, and established players like ClubMom have seen steady growth (interestingly, ClubMom just launched a blog network). There are also some newcomers in the space - Australian startup Minti, which launched in March, allows users to post articles about parenthood and get parenting advice from others. Other family sites riding the Web 2.0 wave include Cingo and FamilySite, which both help families communicate. Suddenly the Family 2.0 parody doesn't seem so ridiculous.

So looking beyond the garish green interface, MommyBuzz isn't such a bad idea. The execution isn't bad either - the only problem is driving adoption. Clean, sharable URLs (mommybuzz.com/myname) and a more open approach (widgets, APIs etc) could make sense here.
