MuslimSpace is (you guessed it!) MySpace for Muslims - yet another niche social network. The site was created by Mohamed El-Fatatry, a former computer science student at the American University of Sharjah. And while the interface is undeniably inspired by MySpace, MuslimSpace aims to be cleaner and safer - users and advertisers need to obey strict rules when it comes to offensive language or sexual content. In addition, female members can't post pictures of themselves without hijab (a headscarf).

The strategy seems to be working fairly well - the site has gained 12,000 members since its launch in February, and they claim to be adding 150 to 200 members a day. 80% of the users live outside the US. MuslimSpace also offers paid accounts: for a one-time payment of 10 EUR, you get VIP status and 5MB of storage space, while 20 EUR gets you 10MB and removes the banner ads.

We've seen plenty of these niche networks springing up recently (MommyBuzz, Imbee, MOG, Boompa), but MuslimSpace is an unabashed MySpace clone - I'm surprised they haven't suffered the same fate as the MySpace dating sites. Long term prospects? I've no idea. But there's certainly a perceived demand (especially in the media) for safer, cleaner alternatives to MySpace.
