Jaiku, which has been in early beta since mid-July, is a "social phonebook" that displays the presence and location of your contacts. Users have very simple member pages at username.jaiku.com (see Mashable's) and you can view the status of all your contacts on your homepage. There's also a selection of status buttons to put on your website, blog and MySpace/hi5/Piczo pages. (I'm having trouble finding startups that don't have widgets these days).

Jaiku was created by a Finnish team: Jyri Engstrom, Petteri Koponen, Mika Raento and Teemu Kurppa. They're calling it "rich presence" - a way to share your current availability with other cellphone users and on the web. The only catch is that it's currently limited to Nokia Series 60 Second Edition phones, and you'll also have to pay any data charges. Nonetheless, I really like the idea.

See also BuddyPing, a way to display your current location on your MySpace page (no download required).
