Faces.com is an Australian social network that rolled out a new version on Friday. The site, which has been around since 2004, combines messaging, a network of friends, blogging, customizable profile pages and more. The company has raised $3m AUD so far (approx US$2.25M).
Yet more more features: on site messaging, a drag and drop uploader for your photos and songs, and a photo editor for your desktop (coming soon). Once you've uploaded your photos, you can put them into a slideshow and order prints, all through a rich, ajaxy interface that rarely reloads the page. And just like MySpace slideshows and those from ImageShack, you can post these shows to other social networks.
The Faces site includes advertising, but they also make money from Pro Accounts. While the free membership has a 100Mb upload limit and bandwidth restrictions, the $25/year Pro account is unlimited. The TuneFeed player will also feature radio-style ads, which might raise some eyebrows over at MySpace - the terms of service prevent advertising on profile pages.
Compared to Xanga and LiveJournal, Faces.com is a more rewarding experience - it's much more intuitive, and the features feel a bit more cohesive. But while Faces.com is piling on the features, it still seems to lack a unique angle - MySpace is edgy and focused on music, while Fotolog serves Latin America, Facebook caters to the college crowd, LiveJournal is mainly for teen girls and Bebo targets high schoolers (particularly in the UK). By comparison, Faces.com seems a bit lost - they'll need to find an individual identity if they want to get ahead.
