eBible, a site that aims to make the Bible more social, launched in public beta at the end of last week. Not only does eBible provide a Bible search, but it also offers tagging and the ability to bookmark certain passages. There's a social networking element, too: you can add friends and explore your community's bookmarks or everybody's bookmarked passages. The business model is selling ad space and encouraging users to purchase books in eBible's online store. There's a toolbar for Internet Explorer users, too, and a search plugin for Firefox (full Firefox Toolbar coming soon).
Among religious social sites, eBible joins OakTreeIdea's "MySpace for Christians", and MyChurch's "Facebook of Churches", both of which are great attempts. There's also a MySpace for Muslims. But eBible is unique because of its focus on the religious text itself: it could turn out to be a useful reference. However, there's a lot more they could be doing on the social side: how about the ability to form groups, or even just upload profile pictures?
