iBloks is a service that I reviewed back in June, when they announced $3 million in VC funding. The most remarkable thing about the product was that it seemed utterly pointless: you download the iBloks application, put together some units called "mods" and create a kind of 3D animation (or a "multimedia entertainment experience") that you can then email to friends or use on mobile devices. The company wanted to make money by charging for special mods, without any explanation as to why people would want the product in the first place.
The MySpace Angle
So have iBloks seen the light and given up on their ill-advised downloadable product? It doesn't seem so - they presented it at the DEMOfall conference and they claim to have launched a new version of the app this week, although I can't see any mention of it on the site. Frankly, a web-based product that plugs into social networking sites is a far better idea.
