Why the MySpace Music Player Can't Be Beaten

This week on Mashable we've covered three major markets for social networking add-ons: video-sharing, photo hosting and slideshows. We looked at MySpace specifically, because frankly that's the biggest market for social networking widgets. There's also a fourth major market we haven't covered: audio. As it turns out, audio is completely dominated by MySpace themselves, and the smaller startups face a real challenge. The slideshow space, meanwhile, presents more opportunities.

Digging a little deeper, it turns out that all these categories are dominated by their top three players. Here’s the breakdown of market ownership by the top three in each category:

Audio Players - 99.95%

Photo Sharing - 98.08%

Video Sharing - 92.63%

Slideshow Creators - 86.69%
