Update: Looks like the blogosphere has a short memory: Ted Steven's Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act, which we covered back in January, is breaking out again. Strange how it's being treated like a whole new story, despite the fact that our post was widely reported. I blame ADD. ;)

In the past we've covered the Deleting Online Predators Act, its death, and its re-emergence as a bill from Senator Ted Stevens called the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act. Now a Senator in Illinois is also "thinking of the children", having filed Senate Bill 1682, aka the "Social Networking Web site Prohibition Act". The Senator in question is Matt Murphy (R-27, Palatine).

Just like DOPA and the bill introduced by Stevens, Murphy's new bill would prohibit access to social sites in libraries and schools, this time limited to the state of Illinois. But as you read through the bill, you're once again left wondering what the definition of a social network is, and how many educational sites could be blocked as a side effect - Wikipedia, Yahoo, social news sites?
