I hinted a few days ago that the social media site Imeem was going to make a move on its copyright policy, although we couldn't talk about it then due to embargoes. On Thursday morning, Imeem will announce a deal with Snocap, the widget-based music seller, in an effort to protect artists' rights (aka. "keep the labels off our back").

The deal sounds a little different to the Snocap-MySpace agreement: Imeem will use Snocap's technology to track music being played on the site and share ad revenue with the artists. Snocap will provide its "content identification and registry system" to keep the artists and labels happy and avoiding a major lawsuit for Imeem.

This ad revenue sharing model is something we haven't seen from Snocap before: I'd assumed they were more concerned with selling music through widgets. Either way, Imeem has improved its stance on copyright while Imeem users can keep listening to their favorite tracks.
