Stocks in Apple, Google and the word "awesome!!" rose tenfold today as Digg, an after-school club for geeks, announced its millionth member.

Ah, but we're being nasty to Digg, the which has successfully built its social news site into a real force on the web. Expansion of the site seems to have been successful, and personally I find the videos section far superior to YouTube's own broken ranking system. Digg has long since eclipsed Slashdot as the leading hangout for the tech-obsessed, and it seems likely that they'll continue that trend.

It's pretty irresponsible, however, to throw out stats like "1 million users". What this means is "one million registered accounts". Since Digg's model of voting on stories positively begs for people to set up tens, if not hundreds of fake accounts, and some accounts are likely unused or abandoned, we can safely say than Digg isn't really approaching seven figures. In fact, some users seem surprised that Digg "only" has 1 million users - if you read enough Digg stories, you'll come away believing that Digg is at least as big as YouTube.
