This Digg disaster is unbelievable: we thought things looked insane a few hours ago, but now the Diggers have stepped things up an notch, with the HD number posted many millions of times across the site. Kevin Rose, it seems, has gone from being a deity to a dictator in the eyes of the teen and college-dominated user base.

We grabbed a new shot of the homepage with the HD-DVD-related stories outlined in red. How many stories? Every single one, going back at least 5 pages (numbers blurred, to keep us legit). For an idea of when this madness will end, take a look at the Upcoming Stories section - all but one are HD-DVD related, and I think that last one was buried right after we grabbed the shot. This situation will go on for many more hours unless Digg steps in - and as I mentioned, stepping in may make them liable.

We originally thought that rapidly dropping Digg counts (a homepage story had 17 Diggs a second ago) were the result of intervention, but based on numerous other site issues, I think it's probably just the Digg servers failing to keep up.
