Google Slaps Down $625 Million for Postini

Postini, if you haven't heard of them, is a company that specializes in e-mail (and web communication in general) security, encryption and policy enforcement, with 10 million users worldwide. Their services are web hosted, which means that users don't have to install any software to use them, just like Google's services. Now, word comes out that Google bought Postini for a hefty sum of $625 million.

This acquisition is definitely a logical step for Google and another indicator that they're serious about delivering enterprise-grade online applications in the future. Businesses need rock-solid security, and Google hopes to be able to deliver that with Postini's assets. All that talk about Google Apps not competing with Office; well, it might not be competing with it feature-wise, but it's definitely competing for a chunk of its market.
