Truveo, the video search engine acquired by AOL in January 2006, has relaunched today as an online video destination. Through the launch, AOL is taking on market leader YouTube, but also Google Video, which now searches across multiple video sites.
So what's unique about it? Truveo says it has a sharper focus on professional content: conduct a search, and commercially produced media is given priority over user-generated content. It's not the prettiest of sites, but it does stand out for one reason: oodles and oodles of content to keep users engaged. The only slight usability issue: some of the media companies insist that users visit their own websites to view the clips, so you end up hopping back and forth, and having to tolerate the horrible video players on those sites (Windows Media and RealPlayer).
