Facebook is prepping some changes to their developer platform and they're giving everyone a heads up so they can prepare for it. The majority of the changes are directed at making sure their users aren't unknowingly used for further promotion and unwanted contact.

No longer will an app be able to put an "Add this app" button in the users profile without their agreement to it being displayed. Meanwhile, email functionality is being removed from the notifications.send portion of the API due to the number of deceptive and misleading notifications that have been sent out. They will look into adding a safer method later on.

Additionally, users that wish to invite their friends to use an app along with them will be getting a new interface that gives them more control over which friends they are sending the requests out to. The hope is that this will make it easier for everyone to understand what exactly is being sent and reduce the work on developers so they don't have to build it themselves.

Projects not yet fully fleshed out include changes to the application directory with a greater focus on user engagement as opposed to total number of users. There also plans to optimize the news feed with more attention being paid to feed stories being shown to users who haven't added the app. It looks as though Facebook is continuing to protect its users from developers who push the limits; always a good sign.
