Microsoft is trying to work out a content distribution deal with the BBC as the software company is getting ready to launch its digital television and video service in Europe, through the Xbox.

Going along the same path as it took in the U.S., Microsoft will be promoting its Xbox 360 as a hub for film and television shows in HD. With existing deals in the U.S., Microsoft is turning to the BBC in order to offer its content in Europe through the Xbox. With the BBC being a major player, and with its existing interest in providing content across platforms, the deal seems poised to go through. Microsoft has reportedly been in talks with other European content providers as well.

What makes the deal all the more interesting is it's potential to raise speculation and controversy, as Microsoft is already closely involved with the BBC for the network's own iPlayer, which uses Microsoft's DRM protection technology. The limited way in which the iPlayer can be used has brought a great deal of backlash in the U.K. The impending deal could also push Sony further back in it's efforts to become dominant for video download and distribution.
