BitTorrents are a touchy subject these days, between content owners wanting them destroyed and being in the middle of legal net neutrality issues. And Etology would prefer to stay away from the matter all together. The distributed ad network is getting ready to pull BitTorrent sites from its options for advertising. A letter to BitTorrent sites participating in its ad network stated the following:
“Due to the legal implications involved with sponsoring torrent sites, our management team has made the decision to remove from our network torrent sites that promote copyrighted content.”
What it sounds like is one or more advertisers has enough clout to make a ruckus big enough for Etology to change its policy. Could it be a traditional media content owner, perhaps? Torrent Freak reports that some like Wal-Mart have taken advantage of BitTorrent sites for advertising, displaying ads for DVDs alongside torrents featuring associated torrents. But someone else out there doesn't think that would be such a good idea. Considering the global reach that Etology is striving for, having to appeal to international advertisers may have something to do with this decision as well.
