All you Wikipedia users out there will be happy to know that you can now legally mix your Wikipedia content with Creative Commons content. The two have penned a deal with the Free Software Foundation in order to extend a common manner in which the three can offer compatibility amongst the three entities.

[img src="" caption="" credit="" alt=""]The story as to how this cooperative partnership came about is a long and laborious one--here are some key points you may find interesting: as Creative Commons wasn't around when Wikipedia first came on the scene, it was up to Wikipedia to have some sort of licensing system, which is called the Free Documentation License. Now that Creative Commons has emerged as a standard for content owners that share media across the web, it's become rather important for Wikipedia to incorporate it somehow into its own database of collective knowledge.

The partnership should make it easier for Wikipedia users to utilize content for the site, as well as for others to share site content. It may be important to note that this partnership with Creative Commons is not replacing Wikipedia's own licensing offering. Wikipedia users have a choice as to which type of licensing they'd like to take advantage of for protecting their content. See here for more Creative Commons resources.
