The rumored trans-Pacific fiber optic cable linking the US and Japan is finally coming to fruition. Called Unity, the high-bandwidth, sub-sea cable is a project headed by Google and five other international companies, including Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, KDDI Corp., Pancet and SingTel.

With increasing demands for communication between the US and Japan, these companies have banded together for the $300 million project. There was a similar project talked about for crossing the Atlantic some years ago, but we all know how that ended. Now that demand has reached an all time high, and the growth in Internet traffic is expected to continually rise over the next few years, the sub-sea fiber optic cable project is met with due justification.
