That darn slowing economy. It's mucking things up again. Namely, spending on advertising within social networks. Last we heard from eMarketer, the estimated amount of advertising spending on social networking was right around $1.6 billion. That's now dropped to $1.4 billion, which seems like minuscule drop overall, but can appear more significant when you look at the numbers specific to individual networks.
For instance, eMarketer is now estimating that MySpace will take an 11.2% hit, dropping from $850 million advertising income to $755 million. And Facebook? An estimated 12.9% drop, at $265 million down from $305 million.
What's going on?
