Breaking: Facebook Jabber Compatibility to Be Announced Tonight

Could we be seeing Facebook's fresh new chat program in a lot of new places?  Signs seem to indicate that as a distinct possibility.  Justin Smith was first to report today that Facebook is intending to announce later this evening that their chat protocol will be able to integrate into other apps via Jabber/XMPP. The functionality, according to Justin, will allow users of third party Facebook Chat solutions chat with your "friends who are inside Facebook from the client of your choosing," "see which of your friends are online and view their profile pictures," and "set your status."

The details are still scant, but they are opening themselves up to developer feedback via email:
