As iLounge notes, this represents accelerating growth for app downloads, as it took 6 weeks for the download count to move from 200 to 300 million. Holiday sales of iPhone and the iPod Touch are likely responsible for a significant part of the surge – many developers reported 3-4x bumps in downloads on Christmas Day.
Nonetheless, 500 million downloads is incredibly impressive, and means it’s only a matter of time until the App Store surpasses the 1 billion mark.
