The details of the accord are due to be presented on Friday at a news conference attended by Vatican officials as well as Henrique de Castro, managing director of media solutions for Google, which owns YouTube.

The initiative will involve Google, the Vatican Television Center and Vatican Radio.

Launching a channel may be a positive first step, but new media is not a broadcast medium: it's an interactive one. The challenge will be to engage with the YouTube community - a group not known, as a whole, for its intelligent and informed commentary. (It is also, in our opinion, a fairly secular site.)

What happens when a group that commands respect meets an audience that doesn't give it readily?
