Here's how it works. Go to Film Fresh's website and find a movie you want to buy. Digital downloads range from about $10 - $13, depending on the title. You'll be directed to the DivX player download page if you don't already have it installed. Voila, digital movie bliss. And these are actual film purchases -- you aren't just renting a film like with services like CinemaNow.

Of course, what sets Film Fresh apart from services like Amazon.com's Unbox service and iTunes is that you can burn your films to DVD or Blu-ray for playback in a DivX-certified DVD player. You can also transfer the movie to a USB stick and directly connect it to a Divx-certified device.

There are about 200 million DivX certified devices out there, ranging from the PlayStation 3 to a slew of Blu-ray and DVD players. You can register six devices in addition to your computer, for playback. This isn't DRM-free, but it is certainly a more attractive solution for users with existing DivX-certified hardware. You aren't limited to a number of copies you can make, which is nice for those of us who tend to lose burned discs.

I decided to test the service by buying the film "Junebug" -- which is one of my favorite independent movies. Unfortunately, more than two hours later, I still can't download my movie. I'll credit first-day kinks for the problem, but I hope I can download and watch my movie soon.

So far, the studios that have signed on to offer films via Film Fresh are Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Lionsgate and Sony Pictures. That leaves just Universal and Disney as the only major movie studios not represented. The selection of films is pretty broad, from big films like "Iron Man," to recent releases like "Watchmen," independent films like "Junebug" and even classic films like "The Godfather." I expect to see the selection grow. Studios have already confirmed that hit films like "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" will be coming to the service the same time it hits Blu-ray and DVD.
