According to All Things Digital, Yahoo is about to finalize a sale to VMware, a company that focuses on virtualization software for running multiple operating systems on a single computer. That company's interest in Zimbra seems to be a strategy of reaching "up the stack" to expand its software base for business interests.
Yahoo had originally hoped that the Zimbra acquisition would help improve Yahoo Mail and give the company a foothold into the white-label e-mail business, but that synergy never really came about. Although some aspects of Zimbra did make their way into Yahoo Mail -- enough to potentially complicate an assets sale -- Yahoo is no longer interested in operating the Zimbra white-label commercial product.
