The episode, which featured guest stars Tom Hanks, Neil Young and Will Ferrell, ended with a teary eyed monologue from Conan, who has in recent weeks been pranking NBC for all its worth.
Taking it down to a serious level, O'Brien told the audience: "Walking away from The Tonight Show was the hardest thing I've ever had to do... This is the best job in the world... Despite this sense of loss, I really feel this should be a happy moment. Every comedian dreams of hosting The Tonight Show, and for seven months I go to do it and I did it my way with people I love. I do not regret one second of anything that we've done here."
He went on to thank the fans, highlighting in particular all the "goofy, outrageous creativity on the Internet" supporters came forward with.
