There is an official Twitter account for the town hall, @townhall that users can follow to get more updates. The July 6 live webcast is at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT). Twitter designed and hosted the website for the event.
Politicians are increasingly using Twitter to connect with constituents, announce their plans to run for higher office and share important news. For instance, Republican presidential candidates also plan on debating via Twitter on July 20, using 140TownHall.com as a platform. Still, we can't recall Twitter -- as a company -- actively involving itself in the political process to this extent before.
In many ways, Twitter is the perfect digital version of a traditional town hall. It allows users to voice their questions not just to the politician but to the community at large. We expect that in the build-up to the 2012 election, Twitter will continue to take a more prominent role in the discourse.
