A French court has found Google's Maps application guilty of unfair competition and ordered the search giant to pay damages and a fine.
Bottin Cartographes, a French company that provides essentially the same services as Google Maps, but for a fee, filed the complaint against Google France and won. It claimed Google prices out competitors with its free services. Google must pay Bottin Cartographes about $660,000 in damages and interest, and a $20,000 fine.
"This is the end of a two-year battle, a decision without precedent," the lawyer for Bottin Cartographes, Jean-David Scemmama, told the Daily Star.
Google has said it will appeal Tuesday's ruling.
