The best thing about the new iPad 4G (or "iPad New," as I like to call it) is the retina screen. This 2048 x 1536-pixel screen makes people, places, things and games look real enough touch. It also makes the iPad's 9.7-inch display (the same size as all previous iPads) seem somehow much, much larger. The retina display is certainly the attribute that stands out the most in my video walk-through.
There are, obviously, other highlights. I'd say the $4.99 iPhoto will be a big hit and is certain to undercut the recently launched, and more expensive Adobe Photoshop Touch. I has some fun doing a few simple image edits.
While the iPad's body hasn't changed, the internals are different. It's new 5 MP iSight camera transports all the camera goodnesss from the iPhone 4S into the iPad 4G's larger body. It takes sharp photos, and I noticed a new on-screen control for snapping pics (see if you can spot it in the video).
We also take a brief tour of the new iMovie (make your own trailers!) and Garage Band. Both received small updates that are free to current users.
As I mentioned, this iPad looks exactly the same as the old one, but when I asked the Apple rep if the old and new iPad were the same size and weight, he told me they were "virtually the same." When I pointed out that he used the word "virtually" instead of "exactly" he said the differences were tiny. Turns out the iPad New has put on a little weight. It's slightly heavier and thicker than the iPad 2, though I doubt you would notice unless you were holding both of them.
As you watch this video, ask yourself if these changes: retina display, 4G connectivity and powerful processing and graphics are worthy of an upgrade from the iPad 2. Then let us know in the comments.
