So why birds?

The startup's original product was a suite of web-based creative tools, and the tagline "creation on the fly" was too good to pass up. Each tool in the suite is named for a different bird.

"We thought about doing a terrarium theme," Aviary co-founder Iz Derdik tells Mashable. "But we figured bugs and software didn't go together."

Aviary has since shifted its focus to an API that powers photo features in more than 400 websites and apps, but the bird theme continues. Mashable recently took a tour of the 15-person team's workspace north of Chelsea and compiled the most interesting tidbits in the gallery below.
