Forget bringing paper maps with you on your next journey outside the 3G zone -- Google Maps will now let you download maps in advance of your adventure.

The feature, which has been available in beta form via Google Labs for some time, will initially be available only on Android phones and tablets. You'll need to select "My Places", and add a new offline map before you depart. (See screenshot above).

The full content of the area you've selected will then be available to you, in all its zoomable glory.

No launch date has been announced for the new feature.
