Universal Pictures and Focus Features secured rights to the Fifty Shades trilogy for $5 million in March and have since been looking to fill roles for on screen and behind the scenes.
The trilogy, which centers on 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey’s kinky relationship with recent college student Anastasia Steele, has sold more than 31 million ebooks and print copies worldwide.
"At its core, Fifty Shades of Grey is a complex love story, requiring a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the big screen," Universal Pictures co-chairman Donna Langley said in an announcement.
In the first book, Grey requires Steele to sign a sexual contract, and the two routinely engage in acts such as bondage.
Veteran producers De Luca and Brunetti will be tasked to bring that relationship to life in the book's much-anticipated big screen adaptation. Both have previous experience transforming best-selling books into films.
De Luca has worked on films such as Moneyball and The Social Network -- both of which were nominated for Best Picture at the 2011 and 2010 Academy Awards -- as well as American History X, Blow, Boogie Nights, I Am Sam, Magnolia, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Wag the Dog.
Meanwhile, Brunetti's resume includes The Social Network, 21, Beyond The Sea and Safe, Casino Jack and Fanboys. The duo are also working Tom Hanks's forthcoming click Captain Phillips.
