Blue Note, a new music-discovery app for jazz, sneaked its way into Spotify's top 10 apps list this week.

The app aggregates the eclectic music catalog -- dating back to 1939 -- from EMI's Blue Note Records and presents the music in an interactive timeline complete with filters.

"The super fan can rummage through every recording session their favorite drummer played on while the casual music fans can discover jazz through samples by Madonna or The Beastie Boys," Charlotte Robertson, EMI North America's VP of digital marketing, tells Mashable.

Blue Note separates into three sectors: "Tradition" houses traditional jazz music; "Groove" showcases artists who blend jazz with funk, soul and hip-hop; and "Voices" presents songs from artists not necessarily known for performing jazz. The app also lets users filter the catalog by instrument:

Many of the songs in Blue Note's archives have been sampled on other people's tracks from one decade to the next. The "Blue Break Beats" tab in the app lets you hear the originals and the samples:

Put simply, Robertson says, the app "allows both the educated aficionado to dig through each release in every possible way and also balance that with features like Blue Note break beats that allow new fans to enjoy discovering and connecting with Blue Note."

Here are the current top 10 apps on Spotify, with Blue Note positioned at No. 10:
