Microsoft just launched its Xbox Music service, which aims to combine all the major services in digital music: limited free streaming, unlimited streaming for a monthly fee, and selling songs à la carte. It's everything anyone could want in a music service.
At least that's Microsoft's goal. But how does Xbox Music really stack up against its closest competitors? Does it really bring the same functionality as Spotify or iTunes? And even if it does, is the catalog of music as deep?
Also, it's important to consider the devices that the service will support. Notably, Xbox Music will only be available to Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Xbox 360 users, at least at the start. Not even Windows 7 users are invited to the party, but apps for Android and iOS devices are in the works. Few other services are so siloed.
Despite its unknowns and potential limitations, the Xbox brand carries a lot of weight, and many potential customers are excited for the new service.
