Samsung announced Monday that it has sold 30 million Galaxy S III smartphones worldwide since it went on sale in May, making it the company's fastest selling smartphone to date.

By comparison, Samsung sold 10 million Galaxy S II smartphones -- the predecessor to the S III -- during its first 150 days on sale, showing just how much demand for the flagship Samsung smartphone has grown year-over-year.

While this sales figure is impressive, it still likely falls short of the sales rate for the phone's chief competitor, the iPhone 5. Apple doesn't break out sales for individual iPhone models, but analysts generally expect the company to sell between 40 and 50 million iPhone 5 devices in the December quarter, in addition to the millions of units it sold during the one week it was available in the September quarter.

That said, the Galaxy S III is just one of many smartphones that Samsung offers. The Galaxy Note II, for example, has seen strong sales as well, with 3 million units sold in just more than a month. Overall, Samsung is said to have shipped twice as many smartphones as Apple last quarter.
