Tumblr is now one of the top 10 most-trafficked websites in the U.S. and has a worldwide audience of nearly 170 million people.

Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp posted the news on the company's staff blog Monday, citing Quantcast data.

"This isn’t meant to be a brag -- though you should definitely try our new Android and iOS apps if you haven’t yet -- but a credit to all of your brilliant creative efforts," Karp wrote. "You guys have earned an audience bigger than the biggest TV networks, and you continue to make some of the most thought provoking, insightful, inspiring, funny, diverse, and compelling content being created today."

According to Quantcast, Tumblr's U.S. traffic is up 10% this month, as is its global traffic. The short-form blog receives more than 61 million unique visitors from the U.S. each month and more than 168 million unique visitors worldwide.

The below chart shows the platform's growth in unique visitors during the past two and a half years. In May 2009, Tumblr had fewer than 1 million monthly viewers.
