Gmail service went down for many users just before noon Eastern Time on Monday.
The outage appears to be intermittent, with the service first going down for some users for about 10 minutes. Service was then briefly restored, but soon afterward all access to mail.google.com appeared to stop. Gmail on mobile was down, too, although it was working during the initial outage.
Google's Apps Status Dashboard indicates a service disruption on Dec. 10 for both Gmail and Google Drive. In addition, the status site "Is it down?" said mail.google.com is down.
Service now appears to have been restored, however. Gmail was back for Mashable a little after 12:20 p.m., and many users on Twitter are reporting that the service is back.
Shortly after that, a Google spokesperson responded to our original query: "We are currently experiencing an issue with some Google services. For everyone who is affected, we apologize for any inconvenience you may be experiencing."
Mashable first became aware of the issue when Gmail service went down for our enterprise account, although some personal email accounts and mobile service appeared unaffected. Concurrently Twitter exploded with posts about the outage:

In addition to the Gmail outage, the service appears to be crashing Google Chrome. Multiple users on Twitter report the Chrome browser crashing while running Gmail -- an experience that we've reproduced at Mashable on both Windows and Mac computers. Here's the error message on a PC:
