8.9 Million Oscars-Related Tweets Sent Sunday

LOS ANGELES -- Viewers of Sunday's 85th Academy Awards generated 8.9 million Oscars-related tweets. Twitter users sent 2.1 million tweets during the red carpet and 6.8 million during the awards show, according to Twitter.

From backstage at Dolby Theatre, I kept my eye on the worldwide trending topics. The musical numbers -- which were left out of the show last year -- returned and didn't disappoint.

Adele's "Skyfall" performance and subsequent win for Best Original Song was Twitter's second and fourth top-tweets-per-minute (TPM) moments with 82,300 TPM and 64,000 TPM.

Adele's big Twitter wins are fitting because she had used social media to get fans excited for "Skyfall" last year before anyone even heard the song.

Adele first teased "Skyfall" on Twitter in October with a photo of sheet music. Adele's Facebook page revealed the song's artwork. #Oscars— Brian A. Hernandez (@BAHjournalist) February 25, 2013

Adele accepted the Oscar with producer and co-writer Paul Epworth, who also worked with her on "Rolling in the Deep." In the press room they discussed their collaborations.

"Sometimes it just happens great like it does with us, you just got to connect and just hope for the best," Adele said. "Be really honest with whoever you are working with ... I cried the first time when I talked to Paul about my ex and then 'Rolling in the Deep' happened."

Other top Twitter moments went to the winners of three of the top categories:

Best Picture award for Argo (with Michelle Obama as presenter): 85,300 TPM

I watched Anne Hathaway's speech on mute with "Girl on Fire" turned all the way up—it was totally tolerable.— Ben Harvey (@djbenharvey) February 25, 2013
