Cooking App Picks the Perfect Spices for Your Meal

Do you have a cupboard full of spices but no clue what to use them for? Hold the salt and pepper. A cooking app inspired by a Cincinnati grandmother might just help you kick your recipes up a notch.

For years, grandson B.P. Storn, of Cincinnati, Ohio, used an herb wheel his late grandma gave him. The wheel matches the best herbs to season a dish you might be cooking up for breakfast, lunch or dinner -- making for quite the handy cooking companion. For example, if you're preparing chicken, the wheel might recommend using rosemary, oregano, garlic, basil and tarragon.

Now Storn wants to make the wheel mobile, by raising funds on Kickstarter to create a smartphone app.

The cooking app would also let you work the wheel in reverse: pick a spice and you get a grocery list of ingredients for a dish that works well with that flavor.

The team is asking for $15,000, and as of Monday evening they had raised $728 between 44 backers. Only 27 days are left in the campaign, and backers can vote whether the app should be developed on Android or iOS first.

This is not the first time Storn has turned to the Kickstarter community. Last year, he successfully raised money to mass produce paper versions of the wheel.
