Marriage Equality: 18 Creative Red Facebook Pics

Facebook turned red on Tuesday, as the Supreme Court began hearing two marriage equality cases. Many users changed their profile pictures to red images featuring LGBT lobby group the HRC's red equality logo.

But that was just the beginning. Facebook is a forum for expressing individuality and personality, so it didn't take long for users to add unique twists to the red equality sign. From adding images of Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie to overlaying their own photo, users soon flooded Facebook with spins on the HRC's logo.

Lifelong activist Chris Rico picked up on the trend Tuesday, and decided to capture the creative spirit of Facebook users in one place.

"I noticed a wave of momentum," Rico told Mashable. "I had never seen anything like this on Facebook before -- never something that was this predominant. I thought, somebody needs to archive this stuff digitally."

After sharing a collage of some of the images he saw with his friends, he realized he had to do more. He launched a Tumblr blog, red4equality, where users could add their own creations to what he hoped would become an extensive archive.

"This might be a new idea in history: making sure that somebody's archiving what's happening in real time in one place, other than Twitter hashtags."
