It's a familiar scenario: A young woman is torn between several suitors all under the glare of millions of viewers. Except this time the suitors are actually phones and there aren't millions of viewers -- yet, at least.
HTC launched its much-awaited One phone on Friday with this Funny or Die-created witty send-up of The Bachelorette featuring Dawson's Creek alum James Van Der Beek. Hilarity ensues as the phones attempt to woo her with song ("Are those your speakers or are you sick?" she asks) and pathos ("I didn't have a father growing up, or a mother and I can't have kids," one confesses. Her response: "Well, you're a phone.") In the end, of course, she's wooed by the One.
The video, which will be edited and run on cable networks including TruTV, TBS and Adult Swim, launched an ad blitz for HTC One, which will be available on April 19. HTC, whose fortunes have declined over the past year or so at the hands of Samsung, is betting so much on the launch that CEO Peter Chou reportedly has said he'll resign if the phone isn't successful.
