Nvidia's Project Shield Available for Pre-Order

Nvidia's Shield is now available for early pre-order to those who've signed up to Nvidia's email list, and will open to the general public on May 20.

The Shield, which is dropping "Project" from its name, is a hybrid controller and touch screen gaming device that integrates with Android and Google Play, Nvidia's own TegraZone gaming store, and PCs with a Nvidia graphics card through Steam. It was announced at CES 2013.

The Shield will cost $349, and will retail at Gamestop, Newegg, Micro Center and Canada Computers. It will be shipped in June to U.S. and Canadian gamers.

Powering the Shield is Nvidia's new Tegra 4 mobile processor, also announced at CES. It runs on Android's Jelly Bean, and features a 5-inch 720p touch display and controller with two analog sticks, a d-pad, triggers and bumpers, and a, b, x and y buttons.

Nvidia has been touting Shield's ability to stream games from Steam through compatible graphics cards for months, including modern, graphically-intense games. In the video below, a player demonstrates Assassin's Creed 3 on the Shield.

More information about Shield pre-orders can be found on Nvidia's website.
