Google Play Hits 1 Million Apps

There are now 1 million apps in the Google Play store. That's up from 500,000 apps last year.

Sundar Pichai -- who heads up the Android and Chrome teams for Google -- made the announcement at Google's live event in San Francisco. Pichai touted the app growth as a sign of Android's strength -- both on smartphones -- and increasingly, he said, on tablets.

Back in June, Apple announced it had more than 900,000 apps in the App Store. Although it's possible Apple has also surpassed the 1 million app mark, Google is first to make the announcement.

1 million apps is a huge milestone for Google -- and for Android. It means that Android is not only the most popular smartphone platform worldwide, it also has the most apps.

In addition to 1 million apps, Pichai also announced that Google Play has seen more than 50 billion downloads -- up from 20 billion a year ago -- and that revenue-per-user is now two and a half times what it was 12 months ago.
