'Sharknado' Sequel Finally Gets a Name and Release Date

What better way to close out Shark Week than with some Sharknado news?

After 5,000 Twitter submissions were lobbed at Syfy as part of a sequel-naming contest, the TV network announced the sequel's title on Thursday: Sharknado 2: The Second One.

"Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name Sharknado 2," said Thomas Vitale, executive vice president of Syfy's programming and original movies, in a statement. "This response is another reminder of how Sharknado has become a pop culture phenomenon. We want to thank all our viewers for their wonderful contributions to keeping up the shark-mentum.”

In B-movie's first installment, Ian Ziering, Tara Reid and others got whipped up in an ecological nightmare with sharks flying and swimming through the streets. The Syfy flick, which played in theaters for one night, racked up more than 300,000 tweets during its July 11 broadcast and nabbed the crown for most social TV program stateside. Twitter even dissected the Sharknado phenomenon in a blog post.

The followup film brings the madness to New York City. The Second One will be produced by The Asylum and will hit theaters in July 2014.

Do you think this was a good choice for the name of the sequel? Sound off in the comments.
