Internet Votes One Direction's 'Best Song Ever' as Best Summer Song

One Direction received 8.6 million votes through Instagram, Twitter and Vine to win the MTV Video Music Awards' social voting category, Best Song of the Summer.

The X Factor-grown boy band's "Best Song Ever" jam handily defeated "We Can’t Stop" by Miley Cyrus, "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell, "I Need Your Love" by Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding and "Come & Get It" by Selena Gomez.

"Best Song Ever" premiered July 22 and shattered Vevo's record for most views in a 24-hour time span. People watched the off-the-wall video 12.3 million times on Vevo.com, Vevo apps, Xbox, Roku and YouTube in the daylong period after it debuted.

"This really tracks the intensity of the fandoms rather than the general popularity of the songs," Colin Helms, senior vice president of digital media for MTV, told Mashable.

The video now has 83.4 million views. Here it is in all its quirky glory:
