Apple CEO Tim Cook Joins Twitter

Add this to the list of things Tim Cook is doing differently than his predecessor: Cook, Apple's current CEO, has joined Twitter.

Cook posted a tweet from the account @tim_cook on Friday afternoon, celebrating the launch of the iPhone and the many customers who waited in line for it. Cook was spotted at several Palo Alto Apple stores earlier in the day.

Visited Retail Stores in Palo Alto today. Seeing so many happy customers reminds us of why we do what we do.— Tim Cook (@tim_cook) September 20, 2013

While the account has yet to be verified, the tweet was quickly retweeted by Phil Schiller, Apple's marketing chief, who is verified on the social network:

Cook's Twitter bio describes him as a "fan of Auburn football and Duke basketball." He currently follows a handful of celebrities and Apple employees, including Schiller, Steve Jobs' widow Laurene Powell Jobs, late night host Jimmy Fallon and musicians the Kings of Leon.

Several other prominent tech CEOs are on Twitter, including Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Dell CEO Michael Dell. Cook's decision to join the social network may represent a renewed emphasis on doing more personal outreach both to Wall Street and Main Street.

UPDATE: Cook's Twitter account is now verified.
