Apple Announces Weekend iPhone Sales of 9 Million

Sales of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C came in at 9 million -- higher than analysts had expected -- the company reported on Monday.

The company also reported that 200 million devices are now running iOS 7, the new operating system it introduced last week. The sales broke a weekend record for Apple. The iPhone 5 sold 5 million units the weekend after its release last September. In an SEC filing, Apple also predicted it would post fiscal fourth-quarter revenues in the high end of the previously reported $34 billion to $37 billion. Apple's stock price was up more than 5% in premarket trading.

“This is our best iPhone launch yet -- more than nine million new iPhones sold -- a new record for first weekend sales,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a press release. “The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”
