LOS ANGELES -- Netflix ended Emmys season with three awards -- one historic win during Sunday's 65th Primetime Emmys and two more last week at the Creative Arts Emmys. Netflix's political thriller House of Cards on Sunday won Outstanding Directing for a Drama, becoming the first web-only series to win an award at any Primetime Emmys.
Though House of Cards went home empty-handed in the drama categories for best series, lead actor (Kevin Spacey, pictured) and lead actress categories, the show and Netflix earned high praise from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, whose show won best drama.
"It's indeed a golden age of television," Gilligan told Mashable backstage. "Television has changed a lot in six years ... a big part of what has changed is streaming video on demand, specifically with operations like Netflix and iTunes and Amazon."
Gilligan also noted Breaking Bad may have met its demise after season 2 had it not been for streaming video on demand, as it ushered in new viewers and encouraged time-starved people to keep watching at their own pace.
"I think Netflix kept us on the air," Gilligan emphasized.
Netflix had 14 nods for House of Cards, Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove. For the Outstanding Directing in a Drama, House of Cards director David Fincher beat out show heads from Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey and Homeland. The series' two Creative Arts Emmys victories on Sept. 15 came for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series and Outstanding Cinematography for a Single Camera Series.
Sunday night, however, HBO's Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra took home the most golden-winged statuettes with three in the best miniseries or movie categories.
