Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the world's greatest soccer players. Here's a message that came from his official Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon:
Wait, what? That's a little lot creepy, no?
There's actually a logical explanation for this -- and, in all likelihood, a new opening on Ronaldo's social-media team after the since-deleted tweet.
Ronaldo is launching a CR7 line of underwear next month. There will be underwear for men. There will be underwear for boys. As a promotion for the boys' line, Ronaldo's CR7 brand held a contest on Facebook. According to the promotion's Facebook page, here are its rules:
Upload your best, craziest and funniest fan image showing your love for CR7 and win a trip to meet Cristiano Ronaldo and seen him play a match! The first prize covers three lucky people, so bring a grown-up and your best friend.
Okay, so that makes more sense. Ronaldo wasn't actually thanking his followers for photos of boys in underwear; he was thanking folks for participating in his contest with completely tasteful fan photos showing true passion for the game. Regardless, "CR7 Boys Underwear Contest" is a pretty awkward name for a promotion -- and the root of this gaffe.
Ronaldo -- or at least his Twitter account -- addressed the mistake, and shared the actual winning submission later on Tuesday:
Wrong phrases out of the contest can be tricky, especially for the ones not paying attention.— Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) October 22, 2013
Still, I'm happy to congratulate @cristianodane for winning the contest with this photo. pic.twitter.com/LG4NKvTuET— Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) October 22, 2013
So all's well that ends well. But when Ronaldo heard about the mishap, we're sure he made this face.
