Samsung Smartwatch Graces Its First Music Video, Demi's 'Neon Lights'

The Galaxy Gear smartwatch made its first cameo in a music video this week. A lime green version of Samsung's gadget appears alongside its tech sidekick, the Galaxy Note 3, in pop star Demi Lovato's "Neon Lights" music video.

Not-so-subtle product placements of tech items aren't new. In 2013 alone, for example, a Beats Pill showed up as a mouth gag in Britney Spears' "Work B*tch"; a Sony Xperia tablet appeared in Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger's "Let Me Go"; and a Nokia Lumia phone popped up in Kelly Clarkson's "People Like Us."

Lovato used the product placement to flash #NEONLIGHTS across the Gear's screen. Lovato loves using hashtags; in March, she challenged fans to unlock her "Heart Attack" video by tweeting words from the single along with #UnlockHeartAttack. In May, she asked fans to tweet the names of songs on her upcoming album in hashtag form. If people tweeted each song title enough, she would let them hear that song for the first time. This resulted in more than one dozen worldwide trending topics.

Samsung has reportedly sold 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches in two months.
