'Hunger Games' Beats Harry Potter's Thanksgiving Box Office Record

The bow and arrow defeated the magic wand as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire broke Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone's long-standing Thanksgiving box office record set in 2001 this weekend. Catching Fire raked in $110.1 million domestically over the five-day holiday weekend compared to Sorcerer’s Stone's $82.4 million pull 12 years ago.

Frozen, Thor: The Dark World, The Best Man Holiday and Homefront rounded out the weekend's top five movies. The box office earned an estimated $294 million from Nov. 27 through Dec. 1 in the United States and Canadian theaters versus last year's $290 million.

The Hunger Games sequel, which came out Nov. 22, has grossed $296.5 million domestically and $573 million worldwide on the strength of its bow-wielding protagonist Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) and a killer supporting cast.

1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($110.1 million)

2. Frozen ($93.0 million)

3. Thor: The Dark World ($15.5 million)

4. The Best Man Holiday ($11.1 million)

5. Homefront ($9.8 million)
